Manda's Animals

What is life without animals? Some people are dog people, some people are cat people, some people are bird people - well, I'm an animal people. Er, person. I can't imagine a life without critters. Sometimes, they pop up on my blog so I dedicated this little piece of my blog to them.

Current Critters: Lucy and Henry
Have you noticed I have two cats running around my blog. Lucy and Henry (Charlie's brother) are two more rescues I got after Charlie died - five days after. I meant to only go back to get Henry but I ended up not being able to say no to taking charming little Lucy.

Lucy is a calico cat (I call her a caramel-chocolate cat Sunday) and Henry is a big cat with a mask and raccoon tail.

I needed that paper. . .
Past Critters: Charlie
I adopted Charlie on November 14th, 2011 and he passed away on January 16th, 2012. He was a Feline Leukemia (FeLV) positive cat. I adopted him through Pet Adoption and Lifecare Society (PALS) knowing this and with their full medical/financial support.

Charlie
Most people don't think about adopting a cat with "special needs." Sure, FeLV is a fatal situation without an unknown timetable. For Charlie, after 10 months, he succumb to it. You can read about that in my Goodbye Charlie post. However, they miss the fact that these cats are amazing and full of love.

Don't think for a second that this isn't one of the greatest cats ever! Seriously, name something cuter than my little Charlie!

I am an unforgiving animal lover and in this blog I have frequently refer to my little furry companions (who came into my life in October 2009), Molly and Mia. Unfortunately, Mia-Monster passed away June 21, 2011 and I had to euthanize Molly-Bear October 3, 2011.

Animals have always been a big part of my life and have been very therapeutic. It's pretty tough to have a bad day when there's a critter in your place.

I am not allowed to have cats or dogs where I live, so (after my Beta, Willoughby, died), I went with the next best thing - rats! Anyone who ever owned rats totally knows where I am coming from.

The rest of you just think I am weird.

While there is no one animal that is perfect for everyone, rats do make excellent pets. They are quiet, cleaner than cats (mine are even litter box trained), very social and bond quickly to humans. Additionally, they are super-playful, silly and will eat anything. Anything.

Molly's Story

Molly was a whore for affection (and food). She always wanted to see what is going on - and she believe "what's going on" includes you giving her some rubs and a treat. She got a bad rap from people because she loved to nip toes and ears. She also liked to pull fingers into her cage with her teeth so those fingers could better reach her itchy spots. This scared people, but, she was just being a rat. She really was a great little rat. She was uber-silly and also loved  it when you talked to her as if she is a baby.

Look at the face!

Mia's Story
Mia was my other rat - I got her and Molly together. Mia was the ruler of the mischief (a group of rats is known as a mischief). As I wrote before, she died in June 2011, however, her memory lives on!

Hi baby!
Mia was always a little sweetheart and she was in charge of decorating and cleaning the rat-nest. Most people who met my rats had a fondness for Mia because she tended to be very gentle and chill. For a while, I thought Molly was my hyper, trouble-making rat - ended up most of the time it was Mia! She is always loved and was missed by both me and Molly when she died (yes, rats and humans bond tightly with their companions and miss those connections when they are gone).

My Rats Are Cute
Yes, my rats are cute. Yes, I talked to them as if they were people. Yes, they lived in a giant pen in my living room. Yes, my Mother does frequently say, "Where did I fail as a mother?" when I talk about them.

Rat Logic
In my dating adventures, my girls played an important role. First, I have rats - 'nuff said. Next, when a guy finally came over to my place, my ratties offer a quintessential test - if the guy is afraid of them, he's out.

Come on, together they can't weigh much more than 1.5lbs. Really? You're going to be scared.
